Nebagamon Drowning Victim Identified

The body of a Wisconsin man was recovered from the area of Lake Nebagamon off the public swimming beach area on Friday afternoon June 23, 2023 at approximately 4:30pm. 

The apparent drowning victim is identified as George Goetz, 74, of Menomonee Falls.

Goetz was in the area camping with a friend when they decided to go swimming to cool off.  He was observed going under the water at about 2:10pm and did not resurface. 911 was called at 2:14pm.

Emergency crews arrived on scene but were hampered in their search due to lightning and severe weather.  When the rescue/recovery efforts were resumed, the victim as located about 40-50 feet offshore in about six feet of water.

This incident is under investigation by the Douglas County Sheriff and Medical Examiner's Offices.  Also responding to the scene and assisting were the Lake Nebagamon Volunteer Fire Department, WI DNR, WI State Patrol, and Mayo Ambulance.
