Update-Missing Person Located

On Saturday 1-8-22 at approx 2:15pm , Deputies from the Bayfield County Sheriff's Office, acting on information from Douglas County, located the vehicle involved in this incident on a forest road about 10 miles west of the city of Washburn.  The area was accessible only by snowmobile.  Evidence on site indicated the vehicle got stuck while trying to turn around and efforts to get unstuck were unsuccessful.  A single set of footprints led away from the vehicle.  Deputies tracked the footprints until dark.

The ground search resumed on Sunday morning.  At approx. 12:20pm, the deceased body believed to be that of Arik Askelin was recovered about a mile away from the vehicle. Foul play is not suspected.

Agencies involved in the incident include: Douglas County Sheriff, Bayfield County Sheriff, Ashland PD, Wisconsin DNR, U.S. Forestry Service, and the Great Lakes Indian Fish & Wildlife Service.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is seeking information on reported missing person Arik Askelin, 30 yr old white male, 5'8, 200 lbs with brown hair and brown eyes. Askelin was last known to be driving a 2006 Chevrolet Suburban, dark blue to black in color with MN plates possibly EAV143 or 987MDV, similar to the one shown below.

It was reported that Askelin borrowed the vehicle to drive a friend to Ashland, WI on Tuesday Jan 4, 2022.  It was reported that he was last seen in Ashland at 11pm on Tuesday and was given verbal directions on how to get back to Superior.  He has not been heard from since.

Anybody with information on Askelin's whereabouts or movements since Sunday Jan 2 is asked to contact the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
