Drowning Victim Recovered

06/03/2020

Authorities have recovered the body of a six year old Duluth boy who went missing in the waters off the south shore of Lake Superior at the mouth of the Middle River.

The initial call came into the Douglas County 911 Center at 1:39pm stating two children were in the water. At 1:46pm, a nine year old female had been pulled from the water and revived on shore.  The six year old boy was still missing.

Boats from the Douglas County Sheriffs Office, the Wisconsin DNR and the US Coast Guard searched the area and located a target using side scan sonar.  Divers recovered the boy in seven feet of water at 6:59pm.

Several children had been wading in calm, waist deep water when these two children encountered a drop-off.  By the time they were reached by adults, the boy could not be located, while the girl was located and brought to shore.

The incident is under investigation by the Douglas County Sheriff's and Medical Examiner's Offices.
