Vehicle, Body Pulled from Harbor

08/08/2017

The body of a 77 year old Superior man was removed from a vehicle pulled from the waters of the Tower Avenue slip Monday evening.

Authorities were called to Barko Hydraulics, 1 Banks Avenue at 4:33pm Monday afternoon August 7, 2017 after employees reported a white colored vehicle racing around on Barko property.  The vehicle made a few passes in the gated area of the lot then left the gated area and drove at high speed across the lawn and off the pier into the water.  Employees raced to the scene in time to see the vehicle floating to the middle of the slip and then sink.  They did not observe any person(s) trying to get out of the car, or in the water.

Divers from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office located the vehicle upside down in about 14 feet of water. The divers hooked up a cable from Lake City Towing's big rig and the vehicle was pulled to shore where the victim was removed.

An autopsy was scheduled to be performed Tuesday in Anoka Co. MN.  Identification is pending notification of next of kin.

The incident remains under investigation by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.  Also responding and assisting at the scene were the Superior Police and Fire Departments, US Coast Guard, Douglas County Medical Examiner, Gold Cross Ambulance, and Lake City Towing.
